Director Graham Zuill recently attended the Axis Communications Oceania Partner Summit in the beautiful Barossa Valley, Adelaide to be educated on the latest emerging electronic security technology whilst networking and discussing current and future trends with like-minded Axis Communications partners. In 2014 the Directors of Focus Digital Security decided that funds usually reserved for Corporate Events and Gifts would be better spent on Community based security projects.

This time last year we approached Koru School in South Auckland, following a tip-off that the school was suffering from graffiti and anti-social behavior but lacked the funding required to have an adequate CCTV system installed. Meanwhile, we at Focus Digital Security had the technical resource and capability available and were so compelled by our visit to the school that it was agreed that all labour, cable and miscellaneous fittings would be donated by the company, with technicians donating their time towards the cause.

Working in partnership with Axis Communications and Channel 10 Security Imports, Focus Digital Security sourced free of charge a full 16 Camera Axis Communications Network Video Recording System complete with premium Milestone Video Management Software; the end result was a modern, turn-key CCTV solution installed at no cost to the school.

Feedback from Koru School on the installation was so positive and encouraging that Directors agreed to repeat the “CCTV in Schools” project for Christmas 2016.

This year the Directors identified Edmund Hillary School in Papakura as the recipient of a full 8 Camera Axis Communications Network Video Recording System complete with premium Milestone Video Management Software. The School has suffered from numerous burglaries, theft from teacher’s vehicles, vandalism and graffiti. The principal was particularly concerned about the impact such negative behavior was having on the children and in particular the trauma caused when items were stolen from the children's classrooms.

Installation commenced in early December and works are on track to be completed prior to the School closing for the holiday break, we hope that our efforts will afford the students and teachers some peace of mind that the school will be protected whilst they are all off enjoying their well deserved holiday period.

Z Energy IP Video Surveillance and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition)

In 2013 Z Energy initiated a Tender process for the upgrade of their analogue CCTV systems in their 212 Service Stations throughout New Zealand. Executives specified criteria that ensured the approved system future proofed their investment to allow for expansion, software upgrades without licensing costs, remote viewing and analytics.

One of Z Energy’s major on-going concerns was the theft of fuel by customers in what is termed within the industry as a “drive off”.

Z Energy conducted a robust Tender process that resulted in the $8 million contract being awarded to Focus Digital Security Solutions Ltd a wholly New Zealand owned and operated business. The approved IP CCTV system was designed using a combination of Axis IP Cameras, Axis decoders and Digifort Network Video Management Software.

Focus Digital were also tasked to develop and pilot an ANPR system to be tested in 11 sites over 12 months to reduce fuel thefts by “drive off”. Focus Digital identified the Global leading Carmen ANPR OCR engine as the most reliable and advanced technology in the market. Focus Digital worked with the Carmen developers who “re-trained” the software using 60,000 New Zealand number plates ensuring the “read rate” was working at optimum accuracy levels. This innovative system enabled pumps to be managed through offender identification and set to “pre-pay”. This reduced losses by over 80%. As a result of this success Z Energy sought further development of software to improve the reporting and analysis of criminal behaviour on their sites.

Focus Digital partnered with Auror, a specialist crime trend reporting company to develop software to meet Z Energy and NZ Police specifications to further enhance the initial investment. This cloud based software ensures Z Energy sites are immediately notified when a suspect vehicle (repeat “drive off” or stolen) enters a service station. Reporting events or incidents to Management and Police is simple and takes minimal time to complete. In addition to a black list the system allows for a white list to be developed to benefit marketing opportunities including customer loyalty programmes.

Focus Digital commenced the installations in 2014 and will have the whole of network completed by September 2016.

The new IP High Definition CCTV Security system has enhanced site security by producing excellent quality images of individual and vehicles under all lighting conditions. The inclusion of ANPR and Reporting software has significantly reduced “drive offs” and other reportable incidents

ANPR systems are increasingly being adopted in traffic enforcement, detection, and prevention of crimes and access control in the public/private sector. Initiatives undertaken by governments and private sector to incorporate new technologies in order to ensure safety is one of the key factors driving growth in the global automatic number plate recognition market. Applications of ANPR systems in the commercial sector have increased in the recent years and shown significant traction in the vehicle-parking segment, petrol stations in order to reduce drive-offs...

Stuart Gregory - Focus Digital Director explain how ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) works.

"The way it works is that if a vehicle enters a Z Energy station and pulls up to the forecourt, the cameras will read that licence plate and check that against a known database of drive-offs offenders.And if the licence plate is found on that database, in real time that pump will be turned to pre-pay - therefore eliminating the possibility of stealing more fuel.

If a vehicle comes on-site and steals fuel for the first time, Z staff can create a report on a computer and send it directly to the police.The vehicle's number plate will also be immediately blocked from services, other than pre-pay, at other Z stations.

If a known stolen vehicle arrives on a Z Energy site, there will be an email alert sent automatically to the police to advise them that vehicle is on that site that exact moment.

But Focus Digital technology is not just about stopping the bad guys stealing fuel.

Although it's effective at blacklisting bad plates, it also has what we call whitelist uses.

There are opportunities, for example, with mobility passes.You register your mobility permit against a vehicle's licence plate and when you arrive at a particular client's site they are alerted in real time that assistance may be required.

We also see potential use of the technology for loyalty schemes and alerting staff when VIP customer arrives.

There's lot's of potential for ANPR and associated optical character recognition technology beyond nailing drive-offs offenders.

Parking management, road tolls and cointainer tracking are potential markets.

It's the point where security technology could merge with workflow and logistics, and is an area where Focus Digital sees a lot of potential growth.
